About

Inland Stories emerges from a sustained practice of invisibility. For the artist, authentic observation demands an intentional withdrawal from the viewer’s gaze, establishing a space of trust where the subject forgets they are watched. Upon this transparency, the written word takes root to execute a second act of disappearance: it erases the factual history of the portrayed subjects and objects, bestowing upon them an imagined life. Rooted in the artist's childhood, this practice stems from a foundational question: if the known identity no longer inhabits a body or place, who occupies that space? Should the manifest Self recede, what desires, passions, urges, or deviations might the submerged, fictional Other enact through that presence? Ultimately, Inland Stories investigates the plurality of selfhood and the vertigo of shifting perspectives, turning observation into a continuous process of rebuilding both Self and Other. Giulia Parisi (b. 1992, Rome) is a Basel-based artist raised between Italy and Cuba. Her upbringing across these opposite worlds shapes a background that exists fluidly between future and past. Navigating a dual cultural matrix, she developed an early ability to shift between identities depending on the language spoken and the facets of the Self being engaged. Working primarily at the intersection of photography and writing, her practice explores the nature of selfhood, who one might become, and how multiple identities can inhabit a single body. It addresses the challenge of stepping outside oneself while remaining who we are: a continuous process of dissolution and self-reinvention.
